History of Oshimili North

Oshimili North is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical significance and strategic location. It was carved out of the former Oshimili Local Government Area in 1996 when the Council Area was split into Oshimili North and Oshimili South. The people are predominantly Anioma people.
In Igbo language, Oshimili means “Great River”, a reference to the Niger River.

Location

Geography

Oshimili North Local Government Area is located west of the Niger Basin, six miles west of Asaba, Delta State of Nigeria. Oshimili North Local Government is one of the 55% of Igbo towns and villages that constitute Delta state.

 

Settlements

Akwukwu-Igbo

It serves as the Headquarters of Oshimili North LGA and it is geographically positioned on latitude 6°41″N and longitude 6°62″E. It shares boundaries with Ebu and Illah to the North, Ibusa and Okpanam to the South, Asaba and River Niger to the East, while Ogwashi-Uku lies to the West.

Akwukwu-Igbo community is composed of 7 villages; Ogbe-Obi, Ogbe-Okwe, Ogbe-Ani, Ogbe-Ofu, Umueze, Ogbe-Ichie, and Umu-Onaje.

Akwukwu-Igbo is predominantly an agrarian settlement.

Igbuzo

Ibusa (originally Igbuzo) is one of the major towns in Oshimili North and is located on latitude 6.40°E and longitude 6.37°N. It sits on a denuding peneplain of about 100m above sea level with the highest point around 120m high. The surrounding slopes of the peneplain are drained by rivers; Oboshi river drains the western slopes, the Atakpo river drains the eastern slopes, while the south is jointly drained by the Oduche, Asiama and Iyi-ojii streams.
With a landmass covering about 260km², it stretches from Aboh, on Ibusa – Ogwashi-Uku road; to Ashia-Uzor near Iyiabi, along Ibusa-Asaba road; and from Azagba-Ogwashi to Abalaunor. It is bordered by Okpanam to the North; Ogwashi-Uku and Ewulu in Aniocha South LGA to the West; Asaba, Okwe and Oko in Oshimili South LGA to the East; and Abalaunor in Ndokwa East LGA to the South.
Ibusa is divided into 3 main geographical zones Otu) viz Otu-Odogwu, Otu-Uwolor and Otu-Iyase; which are further subdivided into ten quarters viz Umueze, Anyala-Obum (Eziukwu and Achalla), Umuidinisagba, Umuodafe, Umuwagwu, Ogboli, Umuezeagwu, Ogbeowelle, Umuekea and Umuehea.
Ibusa people are predominantly Igbo-speaking and a majorly agrarian community

Ebu

Ebu is one of the towns in Oshimili North and is located on latitude 6°28’43” N and longitude 6°36’22” E. It shares boundaries with Illah and Okpanam to the South, Onicha-Ugbo and part of Edo State to the North, River Niger to the East, and Ogwashi-Uku to the West. Ebu is an Igala-speaking people who migrated from Idah to their present location across the River Niger and this explains their agrarian nature and fishing prowess. Ebu Kingdom operates a traditional monarchical system and is governed by “Onu Ebu”. Eight villages make up Ebu Kingdom namely Aganike, Anamaugelo, Ekpenchor, Iyagoshimi, Ogor, Okwuru, Uchebe and Ugbolo. Culturally, the Ebu Wonder is a masquerade natively unique to the people. And the White Eagle, which is believed to represent the Great White Spirit is a symbol of Ebu Kingdom.

lllah

Illah community is located in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Situated on the bank of the River Niger, about 23 to 26 kilometers North of Asaba, the Delta state capital
It is positioned latitude: 6.3333° N and longitude: 6.6333° E
Illah community is situated on a table-land, in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, bordered by Ebu to the north, Asaba and Ugbolu to the south, Akwukwu-Igbo to the west, and the large River Niger to the east
The community is located close to the River Niger, which is a significant waterway used for transportation and trade. There are also several smaller streams that flow through the areas into the River Niger.
Illah community comprises of five (5) major villages who are the founding fathers namely; Umutedem, Ajaji, Umutei, Umuagwu, Umuiyagbo villages and several other villages, including: Ukwumege, Ukpologwu, Ogbe-Olu, Ogbe-Orji and Onya villages.
The Illah people are predominantly Allah-speaking, belonging to the Igbo ethnic group.
The main occupations of the people of Illah community are:
– Agriculture (farming and fishing)
– Trade and commerce (yams, rice, and fish)
Furthermore, Illah is known for its rich cultural heritage, with a strong emphasis on traditional title-taking and cultural festivities, such as the annual New Yam Festival (Emime). It’s lowland and wetlands typical of the Niger Delta region is very fertile, which makes it suitable for various agricultural activities which Illah is recognized for and the richness of its land as a testimony of it’s livelihoods.
The “Abu Ise” is a traditional symbol of Illah community however, there are other Cultural heritage that have brought a significant attention to the Community.

OKPANAM KINGDOM

Okpanam is a town in Oshimili North positioned on latitude 6,233 and longitude 6,650.

Okpanam forms part of the Capital Territory with a landmass of 950Km² and is composed of four (4) Quarters namely; Obodogba, Ugwunadagbe, Amachia and Obodo-Ogwugwu with numerous villages.

It is bordered by Asaba and Ugbolu, a vassal subject to Okpanam to the East; Igbuzo (Ibusa) and Ogwashi-Ukuto the South; Isele-Azagba and Azagba-Ogwashi to the West; and Akwukwu-Igbo, Atuma and the River Niger to the North.
